Healthcare Access Is a Local Priority

We know many of our patients are feeling it right now. The political climate feels heavy. Our democracy feels strained. LGBTQ+ rights—especially for trans and queer youth—are being openly challenged across the country. For many people, that creates fear, exhaustion, and a real sense of uncertainty about the future.

We know many of our patients are feeling it right now. The political climate feels heavy. Our democracy feels strained. LGBTQ+ rights—especially for trans and queer youth—are being openly challenged across the country. For many people, that creates fear, exhaustion, and a real sense of uncertainty about the future.

Washington, DC continues to protect access to inclusive, affirming healthcare, that includes:

  • HIV prevention, testing, and treatment
  • Gender-affirming medical care
  • Reproductive healthcare
  • Trauma-informed, culturally competent services
  • Legal protections against discrimination in healthcare settings

Local laws in DC explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Providers and organizations across the city continue to show up for our community—not quietly, not conditionally, but openly and consistently.

DC is home to a strong network of organizations that exist for this moment—to provide care, advocacy, and support when the world feels unsteady:

  • Whitman-Walker Health: A cornerstone of LGBTQ+ healthcare in DC, offering HIV care, PrEP, primary care, mental health services, and gender-affirming care.
  • SMYAL: Supporting and protecting LGBTQ+ youth through housing assistance, mental health resources, leadership development, and safe spaces—especially for young people at risk.
  • DC Health: Providing citywide public health programs, HIV services, sexual health education, and community outreach.

These organizations—and many others—are why DC continues to be a place where LGBTQ+ people can breathe a little easier, even when the national picture feels frightening.

Rights are not abstract. They affect whether people seek care, whether youth feel safe asking for help, whether someone gets tested, treated, housed, or heard. When access is protected locally, lives are protected locally. And that’s where you come in.
